How To Find the Top Talent

What is a resume screening checklist?

You have a job and a job posting, and you’re getting in resumes. But what do you do to filter out the ones you don’t want, and how do you find those diamonds in the rough that can truly help turn your business around, innovate for the future, and become an immeasurable asset to your team?

The hiring process takes a lot of time and energy, so you probably want to focus on finding great long term employees that will do well, learn quickly, and become a great fit in your company culture. You also know that if you need to fire somebody and then rehire for the position that costs thousands and thousands of dollars.

So, what is a resume screening process that you’ve got to do? What’s at the top of the list, and most important, will likely surprise you.

There is a team building and leadership coach named Theresa Lowe, who was on Amy Porterfield’s Online Marketing Made Easy podcast. In that episode she said that valuing character over skills is one of the most impactful changes you can make to your hiring process. The logic here is that you can train almost anybody to do a task, especially when they have a character that is hardworking, competitive, serving, or helpful.

You need to screen for character before you screen for skills.

When most of us naturally look over resumes our eyes are automatically looking for things like where this person when to school, where they previously worked, what are the skills they are claiming they’re best at, and so on.

Don’t look at that first.

Because you can train anybody to do any particular task— and I know when you bring someone on that might lack experience or knowledge in a particular background you will need to invest in training them— you need to think of the long-tail benefits to hiring.

While it can be attractive to bring someone on that can hit the ground running, it’s moreimportant to prioritize character when organizing your shortlist of candidates. Ultimately, when you hire only based on skills you may find someone who is already fully capable of filling the role but you’re gambling on their character.

If they lack those crucial characteristics and ethics, you will be losing a lot of money and negatively impacting your company culture.

The top of your resume screening checklist should have a single question. What type of person are they?

This Week’s Take Away

Add to your resume screening checklist, at the very top, What Is Their Character?

How do you do that? First, you need to recognize that a person’s character can be multi- faceted. Psychology Today says there is no line of delineation for character, there is no good or bad. There are certain character traits that work really well in certain environments, but are less favorable in others.

This means that some people will have positive success within your company culture, while others won’t do very well and wouldn’t be the best fit based on their unique character.

At my company Stewardship for example, we have a brand purpose that says we love people through finances. It is extremely important to what we do, and the only way you can love is by putting the needs of others before yourself. That means the character trait that I’ve got to have in every employee I hire is selflessness.

I want you to think about what is that character trait that needs to be at the very top of the list, for your business.
