Leaders Hold Back Organizations

Inspired by something frequently said by Dave Ramsey, the provocative thought of what actually can hold back growth and opportunity within a business is something I agree with.

The quote I’m referencing is “organizations are never held back by opportunities or their team, organizations are only held back by their leader”. While I have to admit Ramsey can lack some humility, at times to the detriment of his reception, there’s no arguing that he has a track record of being an exceptional marketer and successful business owner.

Limited Leaders Can’t Grow

Why I agree with what he had to say is because I believe that as an owner you’re the one who is ultimately responsible for your team and their opportunities. Since within an organization a leader is both the last line of defense and the first line of offense in maintaining a positive trend of growth, there’s one business development strategy that you need to implement.

We can talk about marketing, and sales, and other topics that certainly do have an impact on growth but the number one thing you need to do is that you as a leader is growing. If you’re not growing, then you are going to be limited. As a leader, how can you expect your team and business to grow when you aren’t?

If you’re being held back, then your business will be held back.

A great place to start is by continuously evaluating the ways you might be holding back your team.

This Week’s Take Away

This week please make sure that you are scheduling time to evaluate yourself as a leader. On a regular basis, think of what your doing and your performance, and highlight anything that could be preventing your team from growing.

Equally important, turn the focus around from your business and toward yourself. What are you doing that’s standing in the way of your own growth as a leader?

For myself, I make sure to set aside the time to read books, listen to podcasts, read blog articles, go to conferences, and constantly obtaining new information. While I can be a critical thinker, and might not agree with all of it there is always something I can pick out where I can learn from.

I can then take that information and turn it into tactics I can apply to my business, which allows by company to grow.

Because active growth as a leader is so important and tied to my company’s growth, I leave no stone unturned when it comes to self-analysis tools. One of the additional ways I look at my own leadership performance is to ask my employees how I’m doing.

I regularly take them aside and just ask if there’s something I’m doing that’s preventing them from accomplishing their tasks, preventing them or the company from growing, or if I can be doing something else to better communicate how they can win as employees.

There are all kinds of strategies in place to facilitate business growth from marketing, to new technologies, and of course by building an awesome company culture. But the bottom line is if you as a leader isn’t growing, then your business will be held back.
